Overview
What this presentation covers
This guide walks you through powering on your Trezor device, connecting to Trezor Suite or wallet.trezor.io, creating or restoring a wallet, saving your recovery phrase, and practicing safe custody habits. It’s written to be read aloud as a presentation or used as a handout.
Why follow the official setup path?
Using official instructions and official apps prevents spoofing and keeps your private keys offline. Always use links provided by Trezor's official domain or trusted official channels when setting up or updating your device.
Estimated time
Allow 10–20 minutes for first-time setup (longer if restoring from a seed or updating firmware).
Before you begin
Unbox and verify
Unpack the device and confirm tamper-proof seals (if applicable). Check that you purchased from an official store or authorized reseller.
Gather these items
- Your Trezor hardware device (Model One, Model T, or Safe).
- A computer or mobile device with internet access.
- A pen and the supplied recovery card (or a secure method to record your recovery phrase offline).
- Time and a private space to write down and store your recovery phrase safely.
Important safety note
Never enter your recovery phrase into a website or store it digitally (no screenshots, no cloud storage). The recovery phrase is the single master key to your funds.
Setup steps (step-by-step)
1. Visit trezor.io/start
Open a browser and type the official URL directly: trezor.io/start. Avoid following links from unknown emails or search results you don’t trust.
2. Connect your Trezor
Connect via USB to your computer (or via the official method for mobile). Follow on-screen prompts to download Trezor Suite or continue in the browser if directed by official guidance.
3. Initialize the device
Choose to create a new wallet or recover an existing one. If creating new, Trezor will generate a recovery seed (a sequence of words). Write these words down in order on the recovery card provided.
Recommended choices
- Use a strong PIN that you can remember but is not easily guessed.
- Enable passphrase protection only if you understand the responsibility — losing this string means losing access.
4. Confirm and verify
Follow the device's prompts to verify a few randomly chosen recovery words. Only accept firmware updates from Trezor’s official channels and verify the device’s fingerprint when prompted.
5. Use Trezor Suite or wallet.trezor.io
After initialization, open Trezor Suite or the official wallet web interface to manage funds, check balances, and send/receive transactions.
Security best practices
Keep your recovery phrase offline
Write the seed words by hand. Consider metal backup solutions for long-term durability. Store backups in secure, geographically separated locations if possible.
Beware phishing
Always confirm the domain in the address bar. Scammers create sites that mimic the official pages—type trezor.io directly or use bookmarks from when you first verified the site.
Firmware and software updates
Only accept updates through the official Trezor Suite or official instructions on trezor.io. Before updating, verify release notes and the source of the update from Trezor's official channels.
Account hygiene
Use unique passwords for exchange and email accounts, enable 2FA on accounts that support it (but never use SMS as the only 2FA), and keep software on your computer up to date.
Recovery and emergency procedures
Restoring a wallet
If you need to restore, use the official restore flow and only enter your seed on the device itself, never on a computer or website. Verify recovery using the device’s screen prompts.
Lost or compromised device
If the device is lost or damaged but you have your recovery phrase, you can restore on a new Trezor device or another compatible wallet that supports BIP39/BIP44 seeds.
When to contact support
If anything seems off (unexpected prompts, mismatched device messages, or suspicious emails), pause and contact official support before proceeding.
